Breakthrough research — encompassing not only the environment but also embracing technology, the arts, and humanities — is the hallmark of San Diego State University's Field Stations Program (FSP).

Working from a network of four outdoor laboratories comprising more than 8,000 acres of the world's most biodiverse and threatened natural habitats, scientists and students from SDSU and around the world are exploring such critical issues as global climate change and habitat conservation.

Supporting these efforts is a revolutionary wireless sensor network designed to measure and broadcast ecological vital signs via the Internet.

"Our vision for the future is to become a national leader in the area of environmental research and education while serving as an information center for dealing with issues relating to economic growth and environmental protection," says FSP Executive Director Sedra Shapiro.

"To achieve this vision, we are seeking private support to grow and enhance our programs."

The SDSU Field Stations Program have grown to national prominence in environmental monitoring and are developing new strengths in the areas of watershed science, conservation, and fire ecology. The FSP sites are nationally recognized as outdoor laboratories for the integration of information technologies with field sciences. The success of the FSP relies upon major gifts and campaigns to help with facility development, faculty and student research support, and conservation activities (e.g., land acquisition).
