FSP Research and Education:
General Public

Public and Virtual Tours

The general community is invited to tour the FSP sites by completing a use application; groups must consist of at least five people and docent-led tours aimed at specific interests are available upon request.

If you can't make it to one of the sites for a tour, the FSP staff encourages the general public to take a virtual tour of the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve; additional on-line tours are coming soon!

Public Lectures

Jordan Dale Covin Memorial Lecture. The Jordan Dale Covin Memorial Lecture was established in 2000 in honor of Jordan Dale Covin. The lectures are annual fall events open to the public on the SDSU main campus.

Fallbrook Science Lecture Series. In conjunction with the Fallbrook Land Conservancy, the FSP presents the Fallbrook Science Lecture Series, which is a forum where the community and researchers come together to discuss pertinent topics. Researchers present talks on subjects such as natural history and local ecosystems. Six lectures are held on an annual basis.

Interpretive Art

The FSP supports multiple disciplines and especially encourages artists to become users of FSP lands. Plans are underway to develop an art and cultural center on the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve.

The FSP's Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve is also a collaborator in the Palomares Wildlife Sculpture Garden and Horticultural Park (1815 Stagecoach Lane at Calavo Road, Fallbrook), which is an interpretive tribute to wildlife and open space in southern California. Additional participants in the venture include the Fallbrook Land Conservancy and the Art in Public Places Division of the Fallbrook Village Association. To learn more about the latest addition to the Palomares Sculpture Garden, refer to the Interpretive Art section.

Volunteer Opportunities

The FSP often has opportunities for volunteers. Currently, the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve (SMER) is seeking assistance with the SMER Docent Program, which involves a six-week training course. Additional opportunities are available by contacting the FSP's main office at 619-594-0580.
