Fact Sheet: Fortuna Mountain Research Reserve

Location: Surrounded by Mission Trails Regional Park, 15 minutes northeast of campus within the City of San Diego.
Year established: 1968 land deeded to SDSU for education. Mission Trails Regional Park subsequently established beginning in 1974 with county and city joint purchase land augmenting existing city owned land.
Collaborators: City of San Diego, Parks and Recreation.
Size: 93 ha (229 ac) (Mission Trails Regional Park 2,331 ha [5,760 ac])
Elevation range: 91 m (300 ft) to 393 m (1,291 ft)

Watershed and Topographic Features: Contains peak of Fortuna Mountain (333 m [1,094 ft]) which is a prominent feature of the San Diego skyline. Seasonal drainage feeding into the San Diego River which is near the property. Approximately five kilometers (three miles) of the San Diego River flow through park land.
Vegetation: Chaparral, oak woodland, coastal sage scrub.
Facilities: None, no all-weather road access. Visitor Center within park available on requested basis.

From NORTH and WEST: Take State Highway 52 East to the end. Turn right (south) on Mission Gorge. Proceed 2.6 miles to park entrance on the right. The Visitor Center is on the left after the entrance.

From EAST and SOUTH: Take Interstate 8 to Mission Gorge Road north. Proceed 4.1 miles to park entrance on the left. The Visitor Center is on the left after the entrance.
OR
Take Jackson Drive to Mission Gorge Road. Turn right (north). Proceed ¼ mile to park entrance on the left. The Visitor Center is on the left after the entrance.

The Visitor and Interpretive Center is located on Father Junipero Serra Trail, north of Mission Gorge Road between Jackson Dr. and Golfcrest Dr.. Look for the large wooden sign on Mission Gorge Road.
